The Department of Finance Climate Action in Government Operations (CAIGO) Unit helps build skills and knowledge across Commonwealth entities and companies. This support helps entities meet their climate action responsibilities, including progress towards the APS Net Zero 2030 Target, as well as complying with greenhouse gas emissions reporting and climate disclosure obligations.
A range of resources are available, including:
- policy advice and practical guidance
- tools and case studies
- specially designed training programs for APS staff.
Advice and guidance
The CAIGO Unit provides practical advice for specific actions or projects, such as improving building energy efficiency or considerations in new builds.
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) provides advice and guidance to Commonwealth entities to ensure effective management of climate risks and to buy goods and services in a more sustainable way. It does this through coordinated planning and targeted programs. Initiatives include:
- Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program (CROMP)
- Commonwealth Sustainable Procurement Advocacy and Resource Centre (CSPARC)
Training programs
The CAIGO Unit has developed the Climate Action in Government Operations e-learning program. The program includes a suite of courses available to all APS staff through the APS Academy. These courses help public servants with the skills and knowledge they need to support climate action in their work.
Community of practice
The Climate Action in Government Operations community of practice (CoP) brings together government officials working on climate initiatives in their agencies to support collaboration across government.
The CoP provides a collaborative platform for members to:
- exchange ideas and experiences
- share successes and challenges
- promote capability uplift opportunities
- encourage peer-to-peer learning.
The CoP is hosted on the GovTEAMS platform. Access to the CoP is available to staff on request from climateaction@finance.gov.au.
