Commonwealth Grants

On 1 October 2024, the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles 2024 (CGRPs) replaced the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Guidelines 2017 (CGRGs).

What is a grant?

A grant is an arrangement for the provision of financial assistance by the Commonwealth or on behalf of the Commonwealth: 

  • under which relevant money or other CRF money is to be paid to a grantee other than the Commonwealth, and
  • is intended to help address one or more of the Australian Government’s policy outcomes while assisting the grantee achieve its objectives.

The Australian Government provides grants to a wide range of stakeholders for the benefit of all Australians. Grants are widely used to achieve government policy objectives and benefit the public through increased social services, expanded opportunities for businesses, emergency relief and research and innovation.
