Intra-government Communications Network (ICON) is a secure and cost‑effective telecommunications service that connects more than 130 Commonwealth entities and service providers. It operates through approximately 3,800 point‑to‑point fibre‑optic links within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
ICON operation includes:
- more than 440 sites across the ACT
- over 650 kilometres of fibre‑optic cables, containing up to 1,248 fibre cores, which total about 290,000 individual fibres
- over 2,300 access pits connected by 473 kilometres of conduit.
The network of fibre-optic links allows entities to share information securely, up to the PROTECTED classification level, without the need for additional encryption.
ICON enables buildings occupied by a Commonwealth entity to connect to:
- other Commonwealth entity buildings
- a building occupied by the same Commonwealth entity
- a building occupied by a Commonwealth entity service provider including data centres.
