The Ministerial Communications Network (MCN) is a secure telecommunication system used by ministers and government staff. It supports voice, video, and document transfer services up to the SECRET security classification.
MCN connects agencies across Australia, including 59 sites in the ACT and 146 sites nationwide. It provides the core communications services for:
- the National Telepresence System (NTS), which enables secure telepresence meetings up to SECRET.
- the Document Transfer System (DTS), which delivers secure document transfers (Fax) at SECRET level.
- secure data carriage for Commonwealth and state government agencies up to SECRET.
MCN allows ministers and other government offices to stay connected whether in Parliament House, a Commonwealth parliamentary office, an electoral office, or other government agency.
Service features
Through MCN, you have access to:
- a metropolitan area network (MAN) that connects government offices across Canberra
- a wide area network (WAN) that connects Canberra to interstate sites
- flexible access speeds across the WAN to meet your agency’s requirements
- assessment of lead cables, circulators, and downstream infrastructure
- management of required connection points
- relocation services for MCN equipment to a new site
- an unmanaged link option, allowing your agency to use their own data encryption, routing, and IP addressing
- IT and communications support for ministerial events such as Budget Estimates, MYEFO, and ASEAN meetings.
