The Department of Finance manages its property portfolio in line with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
One of the requirements is to prepare and implement a heritage strategy.
Finance also keeps a heritage register to record significant places.
Heritage strategy
The Finance Heritage Strategy outlines how Finance manages its heritage property portfolio, making sure heritage values are included in planning processes and contract management. Read more about the strategy.
Heritage property portfolio
Finance's property portfolio has been brought together over time and contains important examples of land, places, buildings and stories. It includes a number of significant Commonwealth heritage places.
For example:
- places with natural and biodiversity values
- sites of cultural importance to First Nations Peoples
- places that reflect Australia's history and cultural life.
Heritage register
The Finance Heritage Register lists these significant places that Finances owns or controls.
These places are:
- listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List (CHL) or
- identified as having heritage values in line with the EPBC Act.
For example, the John Gorton Building highlights the Commonwealth's role in providing accommodation for government administration.
Some sites are also important cultural landscapes, such as the Googong Foreshores Cultural and Geodiversity heritage areas. They highlight early twentieth century pastoral practices and building techniques.
The register supports Finance's commitment to protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage while moving to a more outsourced property management model and a smaller property portfolio.
