The Department (International Aviation, Technology and Services Division) is responsible for (under the Air Navigation Act 1920 and associated Regulations):
- economic regulation of international aviation
- noise approvals for commercial use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA, commonly known as drones).
The Division also administers the Civil Aviation Act 1988 which establishes the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which undertakes safety regulation for civil aviation. This entity has its own Statement of Expectations, set by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Statement of Intent, pursuant to that Act.
