It has been 12 months since the Digital ID Act 2024 commenced, and more Australians than ever are experiencing the benefits of Digital ID as a secure way to access online services.
Key achievements include:
- In the last year, 80 million ID verified transactions have flowed through the Australian Government Digital ID System (AGDIS) – more than 3 times more than the previous period.
- 15 million Digital IDs have now been created and are being used by people to access 246 online government services. Most of the Digital IDs created are biometrically verified to a Strong level.
- Western Australia has become the first jurisdiction to enable the use of driver licences to create a Strong Digital ID which until now has only been available to passport holders. This is being progressively rolled out to 2.2 million WA driver licence and learner’s permit holders.
- More than 2 million ABNs are now connected to the Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) providing greater assurance to business owners around who can act on behalf of the business.
- Digital ID Rules have been updated to better support individuals who are impacted by digital ID fraud incidents and cyber security incidents should they occur within the Australian Government Digital ID System.
- Addressing barriers for culturally and linguistically diverse people, First Nations Australians and people with disability to enable more people to get and reuse a Digital ID if they choose.
Our next priority for Digital ID is to expand its use across the economy by:
- Delivering on the phased roll-out of Digital ID, by preparing for private sector providers to join the government system.
- Progressing the rental application pilot underway to protect renters’ personal information.
- Amendments to Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) guidance to allow Digital ID to be used to meet the Know-Your-Customer requirements.
- Progressing work to test whether government should offer government-issued verifiable credentials to a person’s chosen digital wallet. A Request for Information will be released to invite potential vendors to share the experience and skills they could bring to the task of building an Australian Government verifiable credential system.
