Security clearance requirements

Employment with the Department of Finance requires all staff to complete pre‑employment screening and to hold, or be eligible to obtain, a minimum Baseline (PROTECTED) security clearance. Some roles may require a higher level of security clearance, depending on the duties involved.

Obtaining a security clearance

If you do not currently hold a security clearance, you will be required to undertake the security clearance process through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). This is a whole‑of‑person assessment that determines an individual’s suitability to access Australian Government information, property, and resources.

To be eligible for an Australian Government security clearance, you must be an Australian citizen.

Transferring from another agency

If you are transferring from another Australian Government agency and already hold an active security clearance, the Department of Finance will complete pre‑employment screening activities, which may include:

  • recognition of your existing security clearance
  • identity verification
  • a police records check
  • any additional checks considered necessary

Access and commencement

You must hold an approved security clearance before being granted unescorted access to Department of Finance premises or ICT systems. Once your security clearance has been granted, you may proceed with agreeing a commencement date with the department.
