September marked one year since the establishment of the Australian Public Service (APS) Procurement and Contract Management (PCM) Profession. Led by co-heads Julia Pickworth, Deputy Secretary, Department of Industry, Science and Resources and Finance’s own Richard Windeyer, Deputy Secretary, Commercial Group, the PCM Profession has grown into a vibrant and connected community of practice across the APS.

The PCM Profession recognises that procurement and contract management are critical enablers of government outcomes, and that a role in procurement and contract management in the APS is not just about a job; it's an opportunity for a rich and fulfilling career that can have a lasting impact on Australia.

Over the past year, we've been building capability in our PCM network through the Community of Practice, the Pathways to Procurement program and the Professional Memberships program.

To mark this milestone, we’re proud to announce the release of the APS PCM Profession Strategy, a forward-looking roadmap that sets out how we will continue to grow and support the profession.

The Strategy includes:

  • A clear vision for a high-performing PCM workforce that delivers value for money
  • strategic priorities focused on capability development, career pathways, leadership, and collaboration
  • practical actions to support agencies and individuals in building procurement and contract management excellence.

This Strategy ensures we’re investing in the people, skills, and systems that underpin effective, ethical, and innovative procurement across the APS.

You can read the strategy on the APS Professions website.
