Commonwealth, state and territory ministers recently came together at the latest Data and Digital Ministers Meeting (DDMM) to progress shared priorities across digital inclusion, data sharing, government adoption of artificial intelligence and cyber security.
Hosted by Finance, the meeting focused on ways state and Federal government can collaborate to improve government services and ensure more Australians benefit from digital technologies.
Key outcomes from the September meeting
- Improving data sharing across governments: Ministers agreed to commence the five-year review of National Cabinet’s Intergovernmental Agreement on Data Sharing, and discussed opportunities to improve access to public sector data and greater data sharing across jurisdictions to improve service delivery to the Australian public.
- Collaborating on government AI and cyber security: Ministers agreed to continue sharing trusted AI tools, governance insights and implementation lessons, and discussed opportunities for partnership and co-delivery under Horizon 2 of the 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.
- Supporting digital inclusion for First Nations Australians: Ministers committed to engage with the refresh of Target 17 of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, which aims for equal levels of digital inclusion for First Nations Australians.
Helping people and communities experiencing digital exclusion
A key outcome from the meeting was the launch of the National Device Reuse Principles, which establish a shared direction for the secure, sustainable and socially beneficial reuse of government ICT devices.
By helping suitable devices find a second life, the principles can improve access to technology for people and communities experiencing digital exclusion, reduce electronic waste and deliver greater value from public investment.
Looking ahead
The September meeting reinforced the value of governments working together on shared data and digital priorities.
DDMM will continue to support nationally coordinated reforms that deliver safer, more inclusive and better-connected government services.
