NAIDOC Week 2026 marked a significant milestone in Australia’s reconciliation journey, celebrating 50 Years of Deadly and recognising the enduring strength, resilience and cultural pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
At Finance, the week came to life through a series of events and experiences that brought staff together to connect, learn and engage.
The week commenced with an opening event in the atrium at One Canberra Avenue, where people gathered to acknowledge the significance of NAIDOC Week. A Rite of Passage, the Secretary’s address and a cultural performance by Clint Fatnowna and family of Bama Dreaming created a shared moment of reflection and celebration.
Across the week, there were many ways to take part. A NAIDOC Poster Gallery showcased 50 years of themes and visual storytelling, while teams from across the APS came together to compete at the Touch Football competition.
There were also opportunities to engage more deeply with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. The Yeribee Indigenous Experiences of Parliament House Tour offered insight into how First Nations peoples have shaped Australia’s democratic processes, while weaving and art workshops provided hands-on ways to connect with culture. A virtual screening of Skin in the Game created space for reflection, highlighting contemporary voices and experiences.
Together, these moments created opportunities for learning and connection – reinforcing the importance of listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and building cultural understanding in everyday work.
As a central agency, Finance plays a role in influencing outcomes across government. Events such as NAIDOC Week reinforce the importance of ensuring policies, programs and services are inclusive, informed and responsive to the needs and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC Week is also a reminder to continue supporting reconciliation in practice. This includes engaging with Finance’s Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan and exploring resources such as the APS Allyship Toolkit to build practical skills and confidence.
