Statement: Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce

The agencies represented on the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce are aware of action taken recently by the Australian Federal Police in relation to a series of spam emails circulated regarding the Eden-Monaro by-election.

This matter was referred by the Australian Electoral Commission to the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce for relevant agencies to consider. As a result, this matter was investigated by the Australian Federal Police.

The Australian Federal Police is the lead agency on this matter.

The Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce is a network of Federal Government agencies that provide guidance and expertise to the Australian Electoral Commission on a broad range of issues within the Australian electoral environment.

The Taskforce comprises the following agencies:

  • Australian Electoral Commission
  • Department of Finance
  • Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications
  • Attorney-General’s Department
  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Australian Federal Police

The Taskforce is also supported, as needed, by the national intelligence community.

The Taskforce was convened for the 2018 federal by-elections and for the 2019 Federal election. The Taskforce is again operating for the 2020 Eden-Monaro by-election.
