The University of Newcastle is a research-intensive university, with a reputation for innovative and collaborative knowledge production, translation and implementation. UON offers a diverse base of skills and experience in research design and methodology (both cross-sectional and longitudinal), including quantitative data collection (e.g. surveys, linked data); research project management; data management; data analysis, synthesis and interpretation; evaluation methods; qualitative data collection (e.g. focus groups); paper and online survey development and design; longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis; and peer review and critical appraisal of research methods, design, and interpretation.

UON also has a strong track record of research excellence in health, particularly women’s health family, domestic and sexual violence; child abuse and adversity; reproductive health; maternal morbidity and mortality; health behaviours; health service use; physical health; and mental health. Longstanding relationships between UON and the Australian Government Departments of Health and Aged Care (e.g. through funding the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health) and Social Services demonstrate UON’s capacity to deliver quality research that is relevant and responsive to policy priorities.
