The Canberra School of Politics, Economics and Society (SchoPES) and the Canberra Business School at the University of Canberra have provided consulting and research services in financial and economic analysis for 30 years. The former has taken over the staffing from the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling, which was recognised as a national leader in applied economic research and analysis.
The staff have extensive experience in analysing and modelling policy relevant issues in business, economics, and finance with state-of-art econometrics and data analysis techniques including microsimulation. Importantly many also have extensive practical experience working in and/or with the public service. Some also teach public servants through the graduate certificates programme.
The SchoPES academics are interdisciplinary; while the majority are economists there are also sociologists, political scientists and experts in international relations and national security. This equips them with capacities for tackling issues from multiple perspectives.
They have also been involved in many projects with state, territory and federal governments, private clients and NGO’s. Examples include modelling higher education fees and grants; economic advice on moving from stamp duty to rates; costing of election promises; advice on electric vehicle policy; and the role of child support.
