Professional growth starts with a conversation

Conversations that shape careers

Last week, Finance staff took part in our annual SES Speed Mentoring event, hosted by the Emerging Leaders Committee.

The event brought staff together with SES leaders from across the department for a series of short conversations focused on career development, leadership and life in the APS. By rotating between mentors throughout the session, participants were able to hear a variety of perspectives and learn from leaders with different experiences and career journeys.

Discussions covered everything from making the most of new opportunities and navigating career changes, to building confidence and finding your own leadership style. For many participants, it was also a chance to connect with senior leaders they may not otherwise meet with on a daily basis.

The event highlighted the value of creating opportunities for staff to step outside their immediate teams, grow their networks and learn from colleagues across the department.
SES Speed Mentoring is one example of the learning and development opportunities available at Finance, supporting staff to build their skills and grow their careers.

Following the success of the Emerging Leaders Committee, the network has recently evolved into the Emerging Leaders Community of Practice. The Community of Practice provides a space for staff to connect, share experiences and learn from one another through peer-to-peer engagement. The community is shaped by its members. Staff are encouraged to identify opportunities, share ideas and lead initiatives that support learning and connection across the department. Events such as SES Speed Mentoring demonstrate how staff can take the lead in creating valuable development opportunities for their colleagues.

By investing in our people and creating spaces for meaningful conversations, Finance continues to build a culture where staff can learn, grow and support one another throughout their careers.
