Are you an APS staff member interested in helping the Australian Government explore how generative AI can safely and responsibly support the way we work? If so, you can be an early adopter by taking part in the GovAI Chat alpha trial.
What is the GovAI Chat alpha trial?
GovAI Chat is a secure, government managed AI assistant being delivered by Finance to support the way people work across the APS, bringing leading commercial AI models such as ChatGPT and Claude into one trusted government environment.
The alpha trial gives APS staff the opportunity to get hands‑on with AI tools while helping shape how they may be used across the public service. It has been designed with security, privacy, and trust front of mind.
The trial forms part of our work to support safe and responsible AI adoption across the public service under the APS AI Plan.
How GovAI Chat can help you
GovAI Chat is designed to support everyday APS tasks. During the trial, participants can explore how AI can assist with activities such as:
- drafting briefs, emails, and summaries
- condensing long or complex documents
- generating ideas or options to support policy development
- reworking text to improve clarity or tone.
GovAI Chat is intended to assist, inspire and support work - not replace professional judgement. APS staff remain responsible for their decisions, outputs, and outcomes.
Why your participation matters
Running an early-stage trial is not just about testing technology - it allows us to understand what works in practice and how AI can be used in real APS contexts.
Participant feedback will directly inform:
- how GovAI Chat evolves over time
- the role of generative AI across the APS
- what guidance and guardrails are needed for APS use
- how AI tools can support productivity and quality without introducing new risks.
Who can take part?
The GovAI Chat alpha trial is open to all APS employees from participating agencies.
You don’t need any prior experience with AI - if you can ask a question, you can take part.
