Finance remains committed to strengthening the capability, culture and leadership needed to support the delivery of the Government’s Data and Digital Government Strategy.
Finance recently celebrated its second Data Week – aimed at encouraging staff to be curious, share knowledge and insights, and see how data is being used across Finance and the broader APS.
To ensure Finance manages and shares data responsibly, we are committed to providing our staff with clear frameworks and development opportunities like Data Week.
Building capability through shared learning
This year a highlight of the program was a panel discussion held by senior APS leaders on how data informs decision making and shapes priorities. Featuring Department of Finance Secretary Matthew Yannopoulos PSM, Deputy Australian Statistician Elizabeth Williamson from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and Treasury Deputy Secretary Dr Angelia Grant, the discussion explored how everyday behaviours, curiosity and a willingness to learn can help build a strong data culture across the public service.
Finance also welcomed representatives from the National Library of Australia, who shared insights from the award-winning Trove Metadata Manager Project. Their presentation offered a fascinating look at how sharing and collaboration can help organisations unlock greater value from the data they hold.
Other Data Week events included a joint Community of Practice session, hosted by Finance’s Chief Data Officer, Nhi Nguyen, where staff learned insights into working on a data project. Then, to close out the week, teams from across Finance held a Roundtable discussion to show staff how data has already transformed the ways we are working, and how it can deliver benefits and drive meaningful improvements.
