Green Lease Schedules

The Department of Finance has updated the Green Lease Schedules – a formal commitment between tenants and building owners which sets a minimum ongoing operational building energy performance standard.

Green Lease Schedules are mandatory for non-corporate Commonwealth entities (NCEs), and recommended for corporate Commonwealth entities (CCEs) and Commonwealth companies.

The Australian Government has used green leases since 2006. The updated Green Lease Schedules ensure alignment with the energy efficiency requirements outlined in the Net Zero in Government Operations (NZGO) Strategy. The NZGO Strategy outlines the practical actions required to deliver the Australian Government's commitment of achieving net zero emissions in government operations by 2030.

Education Courses

Finance is continuing to expand and deliver the Climate Action in Government Operations Program, a suite of e-learning courses designed to build climate capability across the Australian Public Service (APS).

Six courses are now available on the APS Academy’s APSLearn, designed to build essential climate and sustainability knowledge across the APS. These resources provide practical guidance and foundational concepts to support the transition to net zero within government operations.

The current course offering includes:

  • Foundations of Net Zero in Government Operations: Gain a foundational understanding of climate science topics and the NZGO Strategy to enable implementation of the targets.
  • Net Zero Buildings: Discover buildings terminology, tools and actions to meet building targets included in the NZGO Strategy.
  • Introduction to Commonwealth Climate Disclosure: Develop an understanding of the Commonwealth Climate Disclosure initiative and climate risk management.
  • Net Zero Energy: Explore energy terminology, tools and actions to meet the energy targets outlined in the NZGO Strategy.
  • NEW Foundations of Net Zero Emissions Reporting: Learn about reporting terminology and actions outlined in the Emissions Reporting Framework.
  • NEW Net Zero Procurement: Gain an understanding of procurement principles, terminology and concepts, as well as the actions required to meet the NZGO Strategy targets and measures.

APS employees are encouraged to share these training sessions with colleagues to promote a unified and informed approach to achieving net zero emissions within government operations. Further courses are in development and will be added to the program in the coming months.
