Data Carriage Services

Data carriage services facilitate the transmission of data over a dedicated communication network to connect geographically diverse locations. Secured government information is carried across a nation-wide network using service providers from the Internet Based Network Connection (IBNC) panel.

Data carriage services may provide innovative solutions, cost savings and efficiencies that assist entities to build capability and improve government operations.

Where it all began

Data carriage services originated from the Ministerial Communications Network (MCN) which provided data carriage, secure voice, video and fax services to ministers, parliamentary secretaries and their host entities.

The MCN started as a secure voice and fax network in 1987. Primarily developed to support the Ministerial Wing in Parliament House, the data carriage service has since developed into a national network supporting over 140 sites across Australia.

How can data carriage help you? GNS data carriage

The GNS data carriage service allows agencies to administer their own network routing and data integrity. GNS provides an UNCLASSIFIED data carriage service with features including:

  • a wide area network (WAN) providing connectivity from Canberra to a number of selected interstate sites;
    • access speeds across the WAN vary depending on client requirements;

    • manage their own data encryption;
