In June, data custodians added an additional 100 datasets to data.gov.au. That’s not counting all the additional data you can find thanks to our search result sharing arrangements. It must be #GovHack, or as we refer to it in the data.gov.au team, Open Data Christmas.

Google analytics reveal that, over the GovHack weekend, data.gov.au had 4,755 sessions, 2,618 users and 25,370 page views. The most popular datasets included intellectual property government open data 2015, ABC Local online photo stories 2009-2014 and sample household electricity time of use data.

Doing a little GovHacking of our own,  we were able to glean that the most popular places for ABC Local’s online photo stories were Darwin (193), Mount Gambier (189) and Kalgoorlie (188). Below you’ll find a gif showing a simple geographic and temporal view of the publishing of the stories.

We also learned that, in Australia, New South Wales leads the pack in the patent count.

And, the best way to display a pyramid is by using a pie chart.

In June, we upgraded our CKAN instance to version 2.3. The update includes behind-the-scenes bug fixes, a responsive template and extends data visualisation options for users. Another recent addition is an option for data custodians to self-nominate their library for harvest. If you’d like to trial harvesting please let us know.  We’re now working to document these new features as part of the open data toolkit.

Cheers,
Allan, data.gov.au team
