I’m pleased to announce the release of the APS Better Practice Guide for Big Data.

As outlined in The Australian Public Service Big Data Strategy, this Guide aims to support the adoption of big data analytics by agencies.

The Guide provides advice to agencies on key considerations for adopting and using big data. It also aims to assist agencies make better use of their data assets whilst ensuring that the Government continues to protect the privacy rights of individuals and security of information.

The Guide has been developed by the Whole of Government Data Analytics Centre of Excellence Leadership Group in conjunction with the Big Data Strategy Working Group.

A draft of the Guide was released for public comment via our blog in mid December of 2013. I would like to thank the many people and organisations who provided positive and constructive feedback during this consultation period.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for sharing the new and link to the Big Data guide.

One of the first lines in the report mentions " the value of big data lies in our ability to extract insights and make better decisions"

I did note a distinct lack of any specifics on what or how to groom the data to extract the insights from large data sets, which in my experience is the hardest and most critical part of big data plays - )see http://www.searchinsights.com.au/2013/12/simple-google-analytics-tricks-... )

Never the less great to see this is starting to be put on the cards!
