Last night I was delighted to attend the Australian Computer Society’s (ACS) Young ICT Professionals Conference gala dinner to present the Australian Government’s ICT Young Professional of the Year Award for 2011. We are very fortunate to have in our industry the quality of talent shown by our three finalists: John Danassis of the Australian Taxation Office, Squadron Leader Daniel Howarth from the Department of Defence and Duncan Young of the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

My congratulations go to Duncan Young from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Duncan was selected as this year’s Award winner for his outstanding work as the ABS’s leader of Technology Infrastructure. Duncan led the agency’s major desktop refresh, replacing the hardware and software of over 4,000 machines across 10 offices. The refresh has, for example, reduced login times for users by up to 66 percent, with productivity savings of over $2 million. I would also like to commend the work of our other two finalists:

  • John Danassis provided valuable support to management and to service providers to identify and manage potential risks which the Australian Tax Office might face during a change of outsourced providers.
  • Squadron Leader Daniel Howarth has been responsible for the development of a detailed capability proposal for the next major phase of delivery of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) satellite communications (SATCOM) network.

These three young finalists have all demonstrated outstanding professionalism, innovative thinking and commitment to the ICT industry - which made the job of judging, and selecting a winner, all the harder. Through the Australian Government’s ICT Awards program we continue to recognise the work being done in our agencies by our ICT professionals. If you would like to know more about nominating for next year’s Awards there is information on the Finance website at http://www.finance.gov.au/e-government/awards/index.html.

Congratulations once again to the winners. It was a fantastic night (if I do say so myself) and we really appreciate the support of AGIMO. I hope you are all looking forward to YITCon 2012 in Sydney where we can recognise a new batch of Young Professionals.
