Australian Government Response to the Productivity Commission Annual Review of Regulatory Burdens on Business: Primary Sector
Publication Summary
In February 2007, the former government asked the Productivity Commission (PC) to undertake, over five years, a series of annual reviews of the burdens on business from the stock of Commonwealth regulation. The ongoing five year cycle involves reviewing, in sequence, regulation which mainly impacts on the following areas:
- primary sector (completed);
- manufacturing sector and distributive trades (completed);
- social and economic infrastructure services (current);
- business and consumer services; and
- economy-wide generic regulation and regulation not addressed earlier in the cycle.
Minister Tanner released the Government Response to the PC report – Annual Review of Regulatory Burdens on Business: Primary Sector (the Report) on 18 December 2008.
The Report set out the PC’s responses to regulatory concerns identified through extensive consultations with business, government agencies and community groups. The concerns covered a wide range of regulated schemes and activities in the primary sector, ranging from marketing schemes, infrastructure access and animal welfare through to transport and fish stock preservation.
Of the PC’s 61 responses, the Government has accepted 36 and accepted a further 13 in principle. The remaining responses were either noted or not accepted as the Government already has other reform processes underway.
