the video of Finance's work in East TimorBudget
Officer 1 Hi, we're some of the Finance staff that worked in East Timor
in 2000-01. Since May 2000, Finance has worked closely with UNTAET to assist
with the development of a working budget for East Timor. Budget Officer
2 When we arrived in Dili around Easter 2000, there was less than three
months until a Budget for the conference of international donor countries in Portugal
had to be developed. As part of a larger team, Finance helped ensure that
this timetable was met. Finance staff also assisted with a second subsequent budget.
Both were well received by the donor countries. It was a great feeling to
be part of this work. Budget Officer 3 Finance worked co-operatively
with the UN administration and East Timorese civil servants to build a framework
that addressed issues of resourcing and sustainable finances. This was difficult,
but very rewarding work. Budget Officer 2 East Timor has limited
means. In respect to the work on the East Timorese budget just about everything
had to start from scratch. The assistance Finance provided was important
and will help set a strong foundation for the future. Budget Officer
1 The East Timor Budget has been commended internationally, with positive
feedback from the UN and the World Bank. We are very proud of our involvement
and the assistance we were able to provide. It was a remarkable experience
and one we all learnt a lot from.
