About the Data Centre Facilities Panel

The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) has set up the Data Centre Facilities Panel (the Panel). Using the Government’s collective purchasing power, the Panel provides access to high quality data centre facilities. Government agencies benefit from better pricing and contract terms, and not having to approach the market themselves. An approved data centre supplier benefits by entering a small number of long term contracts with the Government.

The Panel is mandatory for all agencies subject to the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997 (FMA agencies). FMA agencies must not lease, build or upgrade data centre facilities, other than through the Panel. Data centre facilities are defined as space that provides electricity, cooling, fire suppression and/or security to data centre ICT such as servers, networks and data storage.

Other Commonwealth, State and Territory Government bodies may also use the Panel. However, FMA agencies have priority.

When to Use the Panel

An agency must use the Panel when making its next data centre investment decision. The investment decisions, or trigger events, are lease expiry, outsourcing contract expiry, major asset replacement, building move, end-of-life of the data centre, or significant increase in data centre capacity.

Getting Value from the Panel

Moving to a data centre facility chosen from the Panel will change an agency’s data centre ICT. This creates opportunities for savings. The opportunities include utilities (electricity and water), hardware capital or lease charges, hardware maintenance, software licences, and telecommunications charges.

The AGIMO data centre team provides guidance on potential savings.
