Mentoring Programs
Overview
In recent years, AGIMO has planned and coordinated a number of mentoring programs aimed to engage Australian Public Service (APS) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) employee groups.
Women in IT Executive Mentoring (WITEM)
Dell’s WITEM Program was established in the APS in December 2005, with the aim of accelerating the development of leadership skills for women within the IT industry and profession.
The Program forms part of a longer-term strategy of attracting and retaining women within participating APS agencies, and combines 1:1 mentoring, together with cross-organisational learning and facilitated group networking. Since its inception, WITEM has positively impacted many mentors and mentees from various senior management roles across the APS. The launch of the next phase of the Canberra WITEM Program is scheduled for February 2010.
The WITEM Program utilises the facilitation services of Orijen, an external organisation specialising in succession, talent and diversity management.
WITEM Extend: Canberra
The WITEM Extend Program was launched in 2008 and builds on the success of the WITEM Program. Its aim is to provide emerging female ICT leaders with access to career development guidance and an increased leadership perspective through the development of a mentor relationship with a senior ICT professional.
WITEM Extend targets women at the APS 5, APS 6, and EL1 levels and combines mentoring from senior ICT professionals from within the APS, together with cross-organisational learning and facilitated group networking. WITEM Extend harnesses the skills and experiences obtained by past mentees from WITEM Programs. It provides an opportunity for WITEM graduates to become mentors for women working in professional IT positions, who aspire to leadership positions at executive and senior executive levels.
Smaller Agency Mentoring (SAM)
The SAM Program was launched in Canberra in 2008 and aims to provide professional development and guidance to Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Senior Managers of smaller agencies in the APS, assisting them with progressing their APS ICT careers.
The SAM Program pairs CIOs or Senior Executive level ICT officers from larger agencies with CIOs and Senior Managers from smaller agencies and also utilises the facilitation services of Orijen.
The first SAM Program participants graduated in June 2009 and a second SAM Program will be launched towards the end of 2009.
