Gain a Certificate IV in Information Technology

Apprentices undertake a formal study program at a Registered Training Organisation. Current apprentices study at the Canberra Institute of Technology, and study subjects such as:

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I gain from participating in the Program?

You will gain valuable experience working in an Australian Public Service (APS) environment, and your study will lead to a Certificate IV in Information Technology (General).

How much will I earn?

Apprentices earn an attractive and competitive salary package, which includes leave and superannuation.

You will receive a pay increase as you enter your second year on the Program.

What is the duration of the Program?

The duration of the program is between eighteen months and two years, commencing in February each year.

What work would I be expected to do?

You will work as part of a team in an ICT area of a participating government agency undertaking various ICT related tasks. There are positions available in a broad range of areas including infrastructure support, networking, applications development, web development, systems testing, systems analysis and management.

Do I need previous ICT experience?

You do not need to have any previous experience with ICT, just an interest in ICT and a desire to learn more about it. All you need is a Year 12 certificate or equivalent and be eligible for employment in the Australian Public Service

Where would I be working?

You will be selected by one of the participating Australian Government agencies across the country. Each agency focuses on specific areas like communication, defence, finance, environment, education and training, health and community services, workplace relations, science and so on.

Is it a permanent job?

You will be employed by a Group Training Organisation and contracted to an Australian Government agency for the duration of the program. At the conclusion of the program, you will be invited to apply for a permanent position in the APS through a merit based recruitment process.

What support would be available to assist me succeed in the Program?

Your supervisor will guide your day-to-day work, answer questions and provide advice. You will also be provided with support through your Group Training Organisation and training institution.
