About: The ISBN is a unique code for the identification of books and book-like products. The ISBN system provides booksellers, publishers, researchers and librarians with a simple and accurate method of identifying books. The supply of ISBNs is a service provided by the ISBN Agency Australia (owned by Thorpe-Bowker). An ISBN can be applicable to non-print media.
Status: Best practice recommendation. Under the 2000 Government Online Strategy, departments and agencies were required to adopt common standards and minimum online requirements, including complying with the principles set out in the Guidelines for Commonwealth Information Published in Electronic Format. The Guidelines also set out best practice conventions for electronic publications, which included following national and international standards such as the ISBN. The ISBN is an international (ISO 2108:1992) and Australian (AS/NZS 1519:1997) standard.

About: The ISSN is a unique code for the identification of serial publications. The ISSN is the serials equivalent of the ISBN (International Standard Book Number). The ISSN system provides booksellers, publishers, researchers and librarians with a simple and accurate method of identifying a particular serial even where there is more than one serial with the same or similar title. The supply of an ISSN to Australian publishers is a free service provided by the National Library. An ISSN can be applied to electronic serials.
