About: HREOC has responsibility for promoting the objectives of the Disability Discrimination Act and provides advice about its implications for website operators (eg electronic publications).
The World Wide Web Consortium devised the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. HREOC's view is that agencies should comply with the W3C WCAG 1.0 guidelines to the single-A level at a minimum.
Status: Mandatory. Under the 2000 Government Online Strategy, departments and agencies were required to adopt common standards and minimum online requirements, including complying with the W3C accessibility guidelines to the extent that they pass recognised tests of accessibility. Agencies also have obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
