Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility (Marine Data)
What is the Marine Data project?
The Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility (AODCJF) is a proposal recommended by the "Report of the Review of the Australian Oceanographic Data Centre" which identified the key national requirements for marine data management and developed a vision for oceanographic data management.
Who is involved?
The AODCJF is a joint venture between six Australian Government marine agencies:
- Australian Antarctic Division
- Australian Institute of Marine Science
- Bureau of Meteorology
- CSIRO Marine Research
- Royal Australian Navy Directorate and Oceanography and Meteorology
- Geoscience Australia
How has the NSIF been used?
A Collaborative Head Agreement developed under the National Service Improvement Framework, outlines the terms and conditions that will cover a range of projects undertaken by the AODCJF and interaction between the agencies through the AODCJF.
Why was the NSIF used?
The aim is to develop a national multi-agency data management system for the ocean data resources of the partner agencies. Key outcomes will include:
- development and implementation of technologies to create a distributed national data centre.
- establishment of standards for ocean data management and exchange (based on ISO metadata standards).
- development and ministerial launch of an Oceans Portal (scheduled for February 2006).
Project Outcomes
The Collaborative Head Agreement was signed-off by all party agencies in November 2005, resulting in the establishment of an Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility.
This is the first intra-jurisdictional project to have successfully implemented the NSIF.
