Open Source Software

Introduction

One phenomenon in software development is called Open Source Software (OSS). This site is designed around the concept of providing and sharing information about OSS. Traditionally OSS was an area dominated by a small highly specialised section of the ICT community. This is no longer the case with OSS increasingly becoming more entrenched in the mainstream ICT community.

OSS is already an important component of the Internet infrastructure. The basic standards for transferring data between computers, for sending email, and translating Internet addresses are all primarily supported by OSS. Recently OSS has been making headway into areas previously dominated by proprietary software and we are now seeing large scale deployments of OSS in government and industry.
