Communities of Practice
Communities of Practice:
- assist practitioners across government to share expertise and build knowledge;
- are vehicles for sharing and building knowledge and promoting better practice; and
- provide opportunities for government practitioners who share a practical concern to share knowledge and solutions, build competency and expertise and thereby help achieve business results more effectively.
Meetings and discussions , formed around a topic or location, are often held face-to-face as well as via email forums. A vital feature of communities of practice is that they are self-directed.
Guidelines for Communities of Practice
The guidelines were developed in 2006 for use primarily by AGIMO to foster a consistent approach to establishing and facilitating communities of practice and provide more consistent experience for participants. It may be appropriate to vary approaches to establishing and facilitating communities of practice according to their membership and purpose, and in recognition of this, the guidelines are not prescriptive.
