Outcomes and Outputs

One of the Australian Government's main objectives is to significantly improve its ability to deliver on its public sector reforms by changing its method of budgeting and managing its resources. The Government as a whole has adopted a more modern and strategic financial management framework, based on outcomes and outputs, and accrual accounting principles.

A major benefit of the new framework will be to improve the information base underpinning all public sector activity. The framework will provide better incentives to be efficient and will make more precise what the taxpayer is getting from the public sector. It will, for the first time, enable the Government to link its outputs to the outcomes it would like to achieve for the people of Australia.

All departments and agencies in the Commonwealth are expected to identify their outcomes and outputs and are held accountable for them. The following link takes you directly to our guidance on Outcomes Arrangements.
