The Group is responsible for advising on and implementing the Government’s deregulation agenda. This involves providing advice on a wide range of policy proposals with regulatory implications and developing and implementing an enhanced regulatory management framework. It also involves the provision of secretariat services to the COAG Business Regulation and Competition Working Group and assisting government agencies and departments to comply with the Government’s policy in relation to regulatory impact analysis and consultation requirements.

The Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR) has a central role in assisting departments and agencies to meet the Australian Government's regulatory impact analysis requirements and in monitoring and reporting on their performance. It also serves a similar role for the Council of Australian Governments in relation to national regulatory proposals.

Deregulation Policy Division (DPD) is responsible for providing advice to the Government on scope for better regulation and secretariat services to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Business Regulation and Competition working Group.
