The Group is responsible for the Government's deregulation policy. This involves provision of secretariat services to the COAG Business Regulation and Competition Working Group, the analysis of current regulations and assisting government agencies and departments to comply with the Government's policy in relation to regulatory impact statements and reporting on their performance.

The Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR) has a central role in assisting departments and agencies to meet the Australian Government's regulatory impact analysis requirements and in monitoring and reporting on their performance. It also serves a similar role for the Council of Australian Governments in relation to national regulatory proposals.

Deregulation Policy Division (DPD) is a policy development and implementation Division. The Division is responsible for providing advice to the Government on Deregulation Policy and secretariat services to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Business Regulation and Competition Working Group.
