What staff think about working in Budget Group

Gus

Gus, an EL2, is a Director in Budget Coordination Branch.

”To have Cabinet look at your arguments and discuss them, that is success, not whether they accept your recommendations,” Gus said.

”Finance gets to ask the hard questions. Not so much devil’s advocacy goes on elsewhere.”

”Everyone here enjoys their work. They take pride in making sure taxpayers’ money is being spent in the most cost effective way.”

”Finance is what I regard as ‘the quiet achiever’ – it’s influential and a very well respected organisation.”

”Working in Finance is challenging and exciting but never boring.”

”The people I work with are great, and yes, we do have fun.”

Ron

Ron, joined Finance in 2004 after 22 years in the Army and more recently, seven years as administrator of a Christian mission organisation.

”I haven’t encountered any ageism. People here value experience across a whole variety of aspects,” Ron said.

”I arrived as an APS 5 and in three years I was an EL2 – a lot of that was because of my experience and being given opportunities to demonstrate my skills.”

”I like the variety and the exposure to policy development and implementation; however you have to come to Budget Group with your eyes open.”

”It’s challenging and constantly changing, and you get to use all your skills and learn new ones.”

”I have a good team and a good boss, but if you want a sleepy backwater, don’t come!”

Maryluz

Maryluz joined Finance with the Financial Management Group and currently works in the Attorney-General Agency Advice Unit.

“Since 1999 I have worked in various departments within the Australian Public Service and some of my best experiences are with Finance. This Department offers you the ability to strengthen your skills in a specialised area and places you in roles that cover a variety of skills. It is great!!!”

“As an officer for a central agency contributing to the government’s decision making processes, you feel your role is valued. Our success is always measured by our professionalism, knowledge and accuracy of advice in a constantly changing environment; there are lots of opportunities to learn and to do new things.”

“We work hard, but we make sure that we have fun doing so.”
